ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna Denied Entry into Angola
Edwin Sifuna, the ODM Secretary General, along with various African opposition leaders, was denied entry into Angola while attending an event invited by UNITA President Adalberto Costa. The ruling government’s actions were met with public condemnation from the leaders, who expressed their frustrations on social media. The reasons for their denied entry are still unclear.
On Thursday, Edwin Sifuna, the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, along with several other African opposition leaders, was denied entry into Angola. The invitation to Angola was extended by Adalberto Costa, President of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), for a scheduled two-day event.
Accompanying Sifuna was Tanzanian opposition politician Tundu Lissu, as well as prominent figures such as Zanzibar’s First Vice President Othman Masoud and former Mozambican presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane. Unfortunately, they were left stranded at Luanda Airport due to the ruling government’s refusal to allow them entry.
Frustrated by this treatment, Sifuna took to social media to voice his concerns, stating, “UNITA President Adalberto Costa invited us to Angola. The Government has denied us entry!” Lissu echoed similar sentiments, calling the actions of the Angolan immigration authorities “totally unacceptable” and deserving of strong condemnation. The reasons behind their denied entry remain unclear and have sparked further inquiry.
The denial of entry to Edwin Sifuna and other African opposition leaders into Angola highlights ongoing tensions and concerns regarding diplomatic relations within the continent. The leaders expressed their frustrations publicly, emphasizing the need for acceptance and respect among African nations. The situation remains unresolved as the reasons for their expulsion have yet to be disclosed.
