No Plans for Meeting Between Guyana and Venezuela Amid Escalating Tensions
Vice President Jagdeo announced no current plans for a meeting between Presidents Ali and Maduro amid ongoing tensions stemming from a Venezuelan naval incursion and territorial disputes involving the Essequibo region. Guyana is pursuing measures at the ICJ and seeking U.S. support.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has proposed a face-to-face meeting with Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali. However, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo informed reporters that there are presently no arrangements to accept this request. He emphasized that the decision will be based on the nature of the meeting and its implications for national security.
This request from President Maduro comes shortly after a Venezuelan naval incursion and ongoing aggressive actions concerning the Essequibo region of Guyana. The March 1, 2025 incursion was met with significant disapproval from both regional allies and the international community.
In response to the heightened tensions, Guyana has sought provisional measures from the International Court of Justice (ICJ). This move follows Venezuela’s plan to conduct elections in the Essequibo region on May 25, just before Guyana’s Independence Day, which has been interpreted as a provocatively direct challenge to Guyana’s territorial claims.
Additionally, Vice President Jagdeo stated that President Ali is currently visiting the United States to consult with high-level US officials. On the same day, US Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, reaffirmed the commitment of the US government to support Guyana following the recent Venezuelan incursion.
The article highlights the ongoing diplomatic tension between Guyana and Venezuela, sparked by a proposed meeting between their respective leaders, amidst escalating territorial disputes. Vice President Jagdeo clarified that no meeting has been scheduled and emphasized considerations relating to national security are paramount. Concurrently, Guyana seeks international support against Venezuela’s provocative actions in the disputed region.
