Nepal Seeks Egypt’s Support for Release of Hostage Bipin Joshi

Joshi has been held captive by Hamas militants since October 7, 2023. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted the Prime Minister’s acknowledgment of Egypt’s crucial role in mediating the Gaza ceasefire and urged Al-Sisi to maintain his diplomatic efforts toward Joshi’s safe return.

President Al-Sisi assured Prime Minister Oli that Egypt would prioritize the release of all remaining hostages during the second phase of the negotiations. Currently, Joshi’s exact condition remains unverified. He was abducted by Hamas while participating in an agricultural study program in Israel, specifically from Alumim Kibbutz. Up to this point, Hamas had taken 251 individuals hostage during the initial assault, with many subsequently released, yet a significant number remain in captivity.

In a separate discourse, President Al-Sisi praised Nepal’s initiative to host the Sagarmatha Sambad, a prominent international dialogue on climate change and environmental sustainability. Prime Minister Oli cordially invited Al-Sisi to participate in this forum, which aims to attract between 160 to 200 foreign delegates in Kathmandu from May 16 to 18. The inaugural theme, “Climate Change, Mountains and the Future of Humanity,” will feature various high-level representatives including heads of state and experts.

During their conversation, Prime Minister Oli underscored the necessity of global collaboration in addressing climate-related challenges, expressing optimism that Egypt’s involvement would enrich the dialogues. Additionally, the foreign ministry reported discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations, multilateral cooperation, and plans for high-level visits between Egypt and Nepal.
