Nepal Appeals to Egypt for Support in Bipin Joshi’s Release from Hamas

On October 18, 2023, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli of Nepal conversed with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to request Egypt’s support in securing Bipin Joshi’s release from Hamas captivity. Joshi has been held hostage since October 7, 2023. Prime Minister Oli expressed gratitude for Egypt’s role in previous negotiations regarding the Gaza ceasefire and urged further diplomatic efforts for Joshi’s release.

President Al-Sisi affirmed Egypt’s commitment to prioritize the release of all remaining hostages, including Joshi, as part of the ongoing hostage exchange negotiations. Joshi, a Nepali national, was abducted from Alumim Kibbutz during a study program in Israel. The status of Joshi remains uncertain as many hostages have been released while others continue to be held.

During the phone call, President Al-Sisi commended Nepal for its initiative to host the Sagarmatha Sambad, an international climate change forum, and expressed his best wishes for its success. Prime Minister Oli extended an invitation to Al-Sisi to attend this event scheduled for May 16 to 18 in Kathmandu. The dialogue will focus on “Climate Change, Mountains and the Future of Humanity,” gathering delegates and representatives from various sectors to foster discussions on climate challenges.

The foreign ministry in Nepal reported that both leaders also explored enhancing bilateral relations, multilateral cooperation, and the potential for high-level visits between the two nations.

In essence, Nepal seeks urgent assistance from Egypt for securing Bipin Joshi’s release from Hamas captivity while simultaneously promoting international dialogue on climate change through the upcoming Sagarmatha Sambad.
