MSF Critiques UN Indifference Toward Sudan’s Ongoing Crisis

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) condemned the UN’s inadequate response to the crisis in Sudan, marked by two years of violence. At a recent United Nations Security Council meeting, the international medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) criticized the global response toward the ongoing crisis in Sudan, calling it marked by “indifference and inaction”. MSF Secretary General Christopher Lockyear emphasized the dire situation, stating that the nation has faced nearly two years of relentless violence, resulting in widespread devastation, displacement, and loss of life.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a conflict between the national army, under General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhane, and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdane Dagalo. Lockyear described this conflict as a “war on people”, highlighting the failure of both factions to safeguard civilians, thereby intensifying their suffering.

Critiquing the Security Council’s call for a ceasefire, Lockyear deemed these efforts as “hollow”. He pointed out that despite the formal statements made, civilians continue to suffer; they are repeatedly subjected to violence, besiegement, and deprivation of essential services like food and medical care.

The ongoing turmoil has forced MSF to halt its operations in the famine-affected Zamzam IDP refugee camp. Lockyear expressed that the Security Council’s shortcomings translate to a feeling of abandonment for the residents caught in violence and deprivation.
