EU Hosts 9th International Conference to Support Syria’s Transition

The EU will convene the 9th International Conference in Support of Syria on March 17 in Brussels, addressing the ongoing recovery and transition following the Assad regime’s fall. The conference will involve Syrian interim authorities and focuses on international support for a socio-economic recovery, while attending to pressing humanitarian crises. On March 17, the European Union will host its 9th International Conference in Support of Syria in Brussels. High Representative and Vice-President Kaja Kallas, alongside Commissioners Dubravka Šuica and Hadja Lahbib, will lead the session titled “Standing with Syria: Meeting the Needs for a Successful Transition.” The event aims to rally international backing for a Syrian-led, inclusive transition, focusing on both aid and socio-economic recovery. Notably, Syrian interim authorities will participate for the first time, as will representatives from the United Nations and neighboring countries.

The current situation in Syria remains precarious, illustrated by ongoing violence against civilians and security forces. The conference will address various aspects of the transition, including international support, immediate needs of the Syrian people, and socio-economic recovery, while also focusing on the pressing humanitarian crisis. Emphasis will be placed on the EU’s continued support for both Syrians and host communities in adjacent nations during this transitional phase.

Additionally, the EU plans to facilitate a meeting for Syrian civil society representatives from both Syria and the diaspora in Damascus later. Specifics regarding this event will be announced subsequently.

Commissioner Hadja Lahbib stated, “The EU stands with the Syrian people on their path to recovery, peace, and a secure future. The dire humanitarian crisis in Syria and the region has not vanished with the fall of the regime. Today we have a historic chance to reset, recover and rebuild.” She expressed confidence in the potential benefits of these developments for Syria and the wider region, affirming the EU’s commitment to an inclusive transition.

Since its inception, the EU has been unwavering in its dedication to supporting the Syrian people, exemplified by its annual Brussels Conference over the last eight years. Since 2011, the EU has mobilized over €37 billion in humanitarian, developmental, economic, and stabilizing assistance, reaching individuals both within Syria and throughout the region.
