Ethiopia’s Initiatives to Support Refugees Amid Increased Displacement
Ethiopia is the third largest refugee host in Africa, hosting over 1 million refugees primarily from South Sudan, Somalia, and Eritrea. Following the April 2023 conflict in Sudan, Ethiopia has seen a significant increase in forcibly displaced individuals. In March 2024, the government started issuing digital identity documents for refugees to improve their integration into the national framework.
Ethiopia ranks as the third largest host of refugees in Africa, currently accommodating over one million refugees and asylum seekers. The majority of these individuals originate from South Sudan, Somalia, and Eritrea. In light of the armed conflict that erupted in Sudan in April 2023, Ethiopia has experienced an influx of thousands of forcibly displaced individuals at various entry points throughout the country.
On 6 March 2024, the Ethiopian government’s Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) initiated a collaboration with the National ID Program (NIDP) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). This partnership aims to promote the issuance of digital identity documents in an effort to enhance the inclusion of refugees within Ethiopia’s national system.
Ethiopia continues to play a crucial role in providing refuge for individuals fleeing conflict, particularly from neighboring countries. The recent establishment of a digital identity system by the government and international organizations represents a significant advancement in integrating refugees into Ethiopian society. These efforts highlight Ethiopia’s commitment to supporting displaced populations.
