This decision was communicated in a letter dated March 7, 2025, by DPK Chairman Esau Kioni and Secretary General Jacob Haji, addressed to the Kenya Kwanza Coalition Secretariat.

In accordance with the coalition agreement’s Termination Clause, the DPK’s withdrawal will take effect 30 days from the notice date. The letter also referenced pertinent political parties, including Ford Kenya, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), and the Maendeleo Chap Chap Party, in its communication. Muturi’s departure from the coalition coincides with his recent criticisms of government actions, particularly concerning enforced disappearances, following the abduction of his son.

Muturi has brought attention to the struggles of families affected by enforced disappearances in the country, sharing his personal experience when his son, Leslie Muturi, was abducted in June 2024. He expressed the trauma faced by his family and criticized the lack of accountability surrounding his son’s abduction, stating he received no information prior to his release.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) continues to investigate the case, while the National Police Service has denied involvement in the abductions. Critics within the government, including allies of President William Ruto, have accused Muturi of politicizing the issue, attributing his actions to personal ambitions for the upcoming 2027 elections. Some have labeled his public criticisms as inappropriate, asserting that any grievances should instead be raised in official cabinet meetings.

Despite the backlash from political figures, Muturi remains unyielding in his stance. He articulated his faith in God and his readiness to face potential consequences, including being dismissed from his cabinet position. Muturi stated, “I do not fear being sacked. I trust in God,” affirming his commitment to addressing these critical issues publicly.
