ACT-Wazalendo Shifts Focus to Political Struggle for Tanzanian Democracy

ACT-Wazalendo, led by chairman Othman Masoud Othman, has declared a strategic shift from reconciliation to an active political struggle for democracy in Tanzania. This initiative emphasizes the need for collective action among political parties to liberate Tanzanians from perceived political captivity. Mr. Othman clarified that “struggle” signifies a non-violent fight for democratic principles rather than aggression.

During a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Mr. Othman stated that cooperation among parties is essential for achieving true democracy, emphasizing it is independent of the upcoming General Election. He underscored that citizens should have control over governance, likening it to owning a property without power over its management.

Othman articulated that securing democracy is the paramount goal, asserting that Tanzanian citizens should have involvement in governance decisions. He iterated that the full implementation of the constitution is vital, highlighting the importance of transparency in governance and economic accountability.

By positing that the political narrative cannot be solely focused on elections, Mr. Othman called for accountability in managing the nation’s resources, questioning how those entrusted with public funds can escape responsibility for corruption. He also pointed out the rich natural resources of Tanzania, such as gold and oil, as requiring enhanced accountability.

The surge in this new approach is attributed to rising frustrations among citizens following electoral irregularities in 2019 and 2020. Reflecting on previous efforts for national healing, he noted ACT-Wazalendo’s significant involvement in discussions on electoral and constitutional reforms as part of the previous government’s reconciliatory efforts.
