Justin Muturi Confirms Democratic Party’s Exit from Kenya Kwanza Coalition

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has acknowledged that the Democratic Party of Kenya (DP), of which he is affiliated, has submitted a notice to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. Muturi stated that the DP is free to make its own decisions without needing to inform him of their activities, affirming the autonomy of the party’s management committee.

During an interview on Citizen TV, he remarked, “The party doesn’t have to inform me these days about the activities that they are doing… they are at liberty to make whatever decision they feel it is in the best interest of the party.” On March 7, the DP issued a 30-day notice to leave the coalition, a letter confirmed by Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu.

Muturi admitted he only became aware of the letter after its submission, indicating that he respects the decision made by the authorized party organ. He emphasized that the DP’s decision to withdraw is legitimate, as stated in termination clause 8 of the coalition agreement.

The DP had previously joined the Kenya Kwanza alliance in May 2022, under which Muturi initially served as the party leader before resigning upon his nomination as Attorney General. The notice, co-signed by DP Chairperson Esau Kioni, was officially addressed to the chairperson of the Kenya Kwanza Coalition and also communicated to other member parties.

Furthermore, according to legal statutes, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) cannot reject a party’s decision to leave a coalition as long as a proper notice is submitted, thus enabling DP to proceed with their exit confidently.
