Ghana Government Allocates GH¢492.5 Million for Disaster Victims

The Government of Ghana has allocated a total of GH¢492.5 million to assist victims of natural disasters, specifically targeting those affected by tidal waves and the spillage from the Akosombo Dam. This funding includes GH¢200 million designated for the individuals displaced by tidal waves in Agavedzi and neighboring communities, as announced by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister of Finance, during the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement in Parliament.

In addition to the tidal wave assistance, GH¢292.5 million has been set aside for those impacted by the Akosombo Dam spillage. Reports suggest that over 300 individuals have been affected, with significant damage including the destruction of 50 homes and erosion of 80 kilometers of coastline as a result of the tidal waves.

President John Mahama visited the affected areas in the Volta Region, promising to prioritize the sea defense project that aims to shield vulnerable coastlines from future disasters. The Akosombo Dam spillage is reported to have displaced approximately 35,857 people, which includes many children, as cited by a UNICEF report.

The Volta River Authority managed water levels from the Akosombo Dam in 2023 to avert an overflow, yet rising river levels and significant water inflow have resulted in extensive flooding in low-lying areas, particularly impacting the North and Central Tongu districts.
