Eight Machar Allies Released from Detention Amid Ongoing Political Tensions
Eight individuals linked to Riek Machar have been released from detention, while key figures, including Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol, remain imprisoned. Calls for their release continue amid escalating tensions between political factions in South Sudan, raising concerns about human rights and the stability of the peace agreement.
The Press Secretary of First Vice-President Riek Machar, Puok Both Baluang, has confirmed that eight individuals have been released from detention following recent unrest in Nasir, Upper Nile State. They were among 21 people arrested alongside Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol. Baluang stated, “We would like to confirm that eight individuals have been released out of the 21 people who were arrested together with the Minister of Petroleum, Puot Kang Chol.”
The individuals released include notable figures such as Nelson Malou Lueng Makeny and Koang Puok Thoat. However, Minister Puot Kang Chol and General Duop Lam, the Chief of General Staff for the SPLA-IO, remain in custody. Baluang reiterated the SPLM-IO’s appeal for their release along with other detained members, emphasizing, “We reiterate our call for the release of Puot Kang Chol, Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam, Deputy CDF of the SSPDF.”
Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, welcomed the release but urged for the liberation of the remaining detainees. He highlighted the need for authorities to observe the rule of law and respect human rights amidst the ongoing political tensions. Yakani stated, “The leadership of the parties to the peace agreement should refrain from resolving their political differences through violence.”
The tensions have intensified between the forces of President Salva Kiir and those loyal to First Vice-President Riek Machar, especially following clashes between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces and youth groups in Nasir County. This situation led to serious crackdowns on Machar’s allies, with the Petroleum Minister and several military officials still under detention.
The release of eight allies of First Vice-President Riek Machar marks a significant yet partial step toward addressing the political tensions in South Sudan. The ongoing detention of key figures such as the Petroleum Minister underscores the continued instability and calls for a broader commitment to peace. Observers emphasize the necessity of dialogue and adherence to the rule of law to avoid further violence and potential collapse of the peace agreement.
