Colleagues Mourn Nigerian Content Moderator’s Tragic Death in Kenya

Ladi Anzaki Olubunmi, a Nigerian content moderator in Kenya, died under mysterious circumstances after being unable to travel home for two years. Colleagues have raised concerns about poor working conditions, lack of support, and the inability to utilize travel benefits. Her family may need to rely on local resources for her burial due to financial difficulties.

In Nairobi, technology workers recently held a vigil for Ladi Anzaki Olubunmi, a TikTok content moderator who passed away under unclear circumstances. She had reportedly been unable to return to her home in Nigeria for two years due to visa issues, which left her feeling fatigued and desperate to go home. Her decomposing body was found in her residence three days after her death.

Colleagues indicated that Olubunmi had expressed dissatisfaction with her working conditions at Teleperformance Kenya, the subcontractor she worked for, citing lack of mental health support, low pay, and extended hours. Although Teleperformance claimed that accusations regarding her denied leave were unsubstantiated, many working in similar positions have voiced their discontent over their treatment.

Over 100 Nigerian content moderators employed by Teleperformance have similarly expressed challenges with their work permits, hindering their ability to travel home. Kauna Malgwi, a friend of Olubunmi, highlighted the plight of workers not being granted essential travel benefits despite their annual tickets, which exacerbates their distress.

After the discovery of her body, Olubunmi’s family was notified the following day. The company reached out to her brother with contact information for local investigators regarding the circumstances surrounding her death. Due to financial constraints, her family is considering asking her church in Nairobi to arrange for her burial.

The tragic case of Ladi Anzaki Olubunmi underscores the precarious working conditions faced by content moderators in Kenya. Many employees endure significant challenges, including inadequate pay and mental health support, while being unable to leave for their home countries. This situation highlights the importance of addressing workers’ rights and mental well-being in the tech industry.
