Uganda Deploys Special Forces in Juba Amid Escalating South Sudan Tensions

The Ugandan military has announced the deployment of special forces in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, to secure the area amid escalating tensions between President Salva Kiir and First Vice-President Riek Machar. These rising tensions have emerged following the detention of two ministers and multiple senior military officials aligned with Machar by Kiir’s government, with one minister subsequently released.

The situation in South Sudan is precarious, particularly with violent incidents reported near Nasir, which threaten the 2018 peace agreement that concluded a destructive five-year civil war, resulting in nearly 400,000 fatalities. Uganda’s military chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, confirmed the deployment, stating, “As of two days ago, our Special Forces units entered Juba to secure it.”

Kainerugaba emphasized Uganda’s allegiance to Kiir, declaring that any aggression against him would be considered a declaration of war against Uganda. Despite the severity of the situation, the South Sudan government’s information minister and military spokesperson did not provide comments when contacted.

Uganda previously deployed troops to support Kiir’s forces during the civil war eruptions in 2013, with withdrawals occurring in 2015 and again in 2016 after renewed conflicts. The concern for Uganda remains that a full-scale war could result in a refugee crisis and destabilization within its borders. However, Kainerugaba has not disclosed whether the recent troop deployment pertains to a formal request by Kiir’s administration or the anticipated duration of their presence in South Sudan.

The deployment of Ugandan special forces in Juba underlines the escalating tensions within South Sudan’s political landscape. With historical ties and prior military actions, Uganda appears committed to supporting President Kiir amid fears of a return to civil unrest.
