U.S. and Ukrainian officials have initiated talks in Saudi Arabia to address the conflict with Russia. Key figures include U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and national security adviser Mike Waltz, with Ukrainian aide Andriy Yermak leading the delegation. The discussions will evaluate Ukraine’s potential concessions and are also expected to touch on a U.S.-Ukraine minerals deal.
On Tuesday, Ukrainian and U.S. officials commenced discussions in Saudi Arabia aimed at finding a resolution to the ongoing conflict with Russia. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the importance of understanding Ukraine’s willingness to make concessions for peace during a press briefing before the talks. He stated that a ceasefire can only be achieved through mutual concessions from both parties.
U.S. national security adviser Mike Waltz is participating in the talks alongside Secretary Rubio. The Ukrainian delegation is led by Andriy Yermak, a senior adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who, despite being in Saudi Arabia for a previous engagement with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, will not attend the negotiations.
The Ukrainian foreign ministry announced the commencement of meetings in Jeddah, sharing a video of their officials entering the venue. Additionally, former U.S. special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, expressed optimism about the impending signing of a minerals deal between the U.S. and Ukraine ahead of the discussions.
The ongoing U.S.-Ukraine talks in Saudi Arabia represent a critical step towards resolving the conflict with Russia. The discussions center around assessing Ukraine’s readiness to make necessary concessions for peace. Both U.S. and Ukrainian officials are keen to explore collaborative solutions, while developments related to a minerals deal further underscore the strategic importance of these negotiations.
