Timor-Leste Parliament Establishes Commission to Support Western Sahara Issue
On March 10, 2025, Timor-Leste’s National Parliament approved a resolution to create a Parliamentary Commission to support the Saharawi cause regarding Western Sahara. The commission includes representatives from all political parties in Parliament. Ambassador Malainin Abba praised the initiative as a demonstration of solidarity and commitment to the Saharawi people’s rights.
On March 10, 2025, Timor-Leste’s National Parliament affirmed its support for the Saharawi cause by approving a resolution to form a Parliamentary Commission focused on the Western Sahara issue. This commission includes representatives from all political parties within the Timorese Parliament.
The composition of the new Commission for Western Sahara features three members from the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction Party (CNRT), two from the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN), and one each from the Democratic Party (PD), the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), and the KUNTO Party.
Ambassador Malainin Abba of the Saharawi Republic (SADR) expressed gratitude for this initiative, stating that it exemplifies the commitment of Timor-Leste’s Parliament and political parties towards the Saharawi people’s pursuit of self-determination and sovereignty.
Additionally, it is important to highlight that Timor-Leste’s previous Commission for Western Sahara was involved in the 46th European Conference of Support and Solidarity with the Saharawi People (EUCOCO) held in Berlin in December 2022, reflecting the ongoing dedication of Timor-Leste to this cause.
The establishment of the Parliamentary Commission for Western Sahara by Timor-Leste’s National Parliament signifies a significant act of solidarity with the Saharawi people. The collective involvement of various political parties underscores a unified commitment to support the Saharawi’s right to self-determination and sovereignty.
