The first phase of the cease-fire led to the release of 33 hostages by Hamas in Gaza, in exchange for thousands of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. Both Israel and Hamas are showing optimism about the forthcoming negotiations, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirming that Israel will send a delegation to Doha.

Hamas spokesperson Abdel-Latif al-Qanoua noted that there are “positive indicators” for the second phase of the cease-fire talks, emphasizing their openness to negotiations that consider the needs of the Palestinian population while advocating for assistance to Gaza and the lifting of blockades.

Steve Witkoff stated on March 9 that Hamas must not remain in Gaza for lasting peace to be achieved, underscoring the necessity for deadlines in the negotiations. He highlighted the “deplorable” conditions experienced by released hostages, who suffered from hunger and lack of medical care.

Hamas captured 251 hostages during its attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which marked the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust and resulted in over 1,200 Israeli deaths. Recent U.S. interactions with Hamas suggested productive discussions regarding hostage release, although no formal agreement has yet been finalized.

In a post on Truth Social, former President Trump issued an ultimatum to Hamas to free the hostages, asserting “Shalom Hamas means Hello and Goodbye” and warning of severe consequences if they do not comply. He urged for immediate action regarding both the hostages and the remains of deceased victims.
