Tropical storm JUDE has caused significant damage to the EN1 highway in Nampula, prompting immediate restoration efforts. The cut on the road measures approximately 15 meters long and 5 to 7 meters deep. Multiple routes in the province are impassable, and while humanitarian assessments are pending, emergency kits have been pre-positioned in critical areas.
In Nampula, the National Road No. 1 (EN1) has been rendered impassable at the Anchilo Control Post due to excessive rain caused by the severe tropical storm JUDE. Restoration efforts on the highway will commence on Tuesday, though there is currently no specified timeline for when traffic will resume.
Faquira Massalo, the Director of Public Works in Nampula, characterized the road damage as significant. Given the EN1’s critical importance, immediate efforts will begin to restore traffic, although completion dates remain undetermined.
The affected area measures approximately 15 meters in length and ranges from 5 to 7 meters in depth. Engineers from the National Roads Administration (ANE) and the contractor responsible for the emergency repairs will assess the site to devise a plan, including installing washers to alleviate water flow.
Currently, multiple routes in Nampula province are inaccessible, including cuts from Nametil to Angoche, Nampula to Liúpio, and Naguema to Chocas-mar, in addition to other affected segments.
Concerning the humanitarian impact of the storm, Anacleta Botão, the delegate of the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) in Nampula, stated that concrete data is not yet available. This limitation arises due to the challenges faced by survey teams, who were only able to begin assessments as weather conditions improved on Tuesday morning. Nevertheless, Botão confirmed that emergency kits have been deployed to areas forecasted to experience the most significant impacts.
