Similarly, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla offered congratulations, noting, “Hearty congratulations and felicitation to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on being awarded Mauritius’ highest civilian honour”.

Birla elaborated that the honor signifies the historical ties between India and Mauritius, built on shared culture and cooperation. He mentioned, “This honour given to Prime Minister Shri @narendramodiji by Mauritius reflects India’s growing prestige and strong leadership at the global level”. In a historic gesture, the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, made the announcement, marking Modi as the first Indian recipient of this distinguished award.

During the event, PM Ramgoolam pointed out that only five foreign dignitaries have received this title since Mauritius became a Republic, highlighting that even Nelson Mandela was a recipient in 1998. The occasion was marked by the playing of the national anthems of both countries in the presence of PM Modi and PM Ramgoolam.

Modi, who is visiting Mauritius as the Chief Guest for the National Day celebrations, emphasized the strengthened diplomatic and cultural ties between India and Mauritius. The Ministry of External Affairs officially noted that during his visit, Modi also awarded OCI Cards to the President and First Lady of Mauritius, alongside notable gifts such as holy Sangam water, superfood Makhana, and a Banarasi Saree. Additionally, Modi toured the Ayurveda garden developed through Indian collaboration with the Mauritius government and expressed his gratitude during a special meal hosted by the Mauritius President.
