Petrobras Confirms Major Gas Discovery at Sirius-2 Well in Colombia
Petrobras has confirmed a major gas discovery at the Sirius-2 well off Colombia’s coast, indicating volumes over six trillion cubic feet. The well’s test results show good productivity, potentially increasing Colombia’s gas reserves by 200%. Petrobras, through its subsidiary, holds a 44.44% share in the consortium, with Ecopetrol owning the rest. Strategic contracts and collaborations have also been established to enhance exploration efforts.
Petrobras has successfully completed a drill stem test (DST) at the Sirius-2 well, located approximately 31 kilometers off the Colombian coast at a depth of 804 meters. This test evaluated a 100-meter reservoir interval and confirmed its potentially “good productivity.” The Sirius-2 well is part of the GUA-OFF-0 offshore block, positioned 77 kilometers from Santa Marta, the capital of Colombia’s Magdalena department.
During the DST, samples were collected for laboratory analysis, revealing a substantial gas presence in the region. Petrobras operates in Colombia through its subsidiary, Petrobras International Braspetro – Sucursal Colombia, holding a 44.44% stake in the consortium, with Ecopetrol retaining the remaining 55.56%. This significant gas discovery was announced by Petrobras and Ecopetrol in December 2024.
The Sirius-2 well has confirmed volumes exceeding six trillion cubic feet, making it the largest gas discovery in Colombia’s history and potentially increasing the nation’s gas reserves by 200%. Originally named Uchuva-2, this well is the second to be drilled in the area, following Sirius-1 (previously Uchuva-1). The consortium plans to continue evaluating the drilling results of both Sirius-1 and Sirius-2 wells in alignment with its commitments to Colombia’s Agencia Nacional de Hidrocarburos.
In a related development, Petrobras signed a strategic term contract in February 2025 with Bharat Petroleum Corporation for the supply of Brazilian crude oil grades. Additionally, the company has established cooperative agreements with ONGC Videsh and Oil India to explore further oil and gas opportunities.
The completion of the DST at the Sirius-2 well by Petrobras indicates a significant advancement in gas discovery off the Colombian coast. With confirmed gas volumes potentially transforming Colombia’s reserves, this project not only enhances Petrobras’s position in the region but also aligns with strategic partnerships aimed at exploring global oil and gas opportunities. The ongoing assessment of drilling results will inform future actions regarding these valuable resources.
