Israel and Lebanon Engage in Border Negotiations Amidst Fragile Ceasefire

Additionally, the negotiations aim to address the situation concerning the release of saboteurs detained in Israel since the onset of the war. As a significant gesture coordinated with the United States and in honor of Lebanon’s new president, Israel has agreed to release five Lebanese detainees, as confirmed in the official statement.

Later that evening, the Red Cross facilitated the transfer of the five detainees back to Lebanon, following their capture by Israeli forces during the recent conflict. The detainees were subsequently taken to the Lebanese Italian Hospital in Tyre, Southern Lebanon.

A fragile ceasefire has been in effect in Lebanon since November 27, which concluded several months of extensive hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, escalating into a full-scale conflict in September 2023. Under the terms of the ceasefire, Israel was initially obligated to withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 26, but this deadline has since been extended to February 18 due to non-compliance; Israel continues to deploy military resources at five outposts along the border.

Lebanese officials have documented nearly 1,100 ceasefire breaches by Israel, resulting in at least 85 fatalities and over 280 injuries.
