Indonesia Targets Harmful Content: 1.3 Million Sites Removed

Indonesia has removed over 1.3 million harmful online content pieces, including 233,552 related to pornography and 1.12 million linked to gambling, between October 2024 and March 2025. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Communications and Digital, also emphasizes the importance of public reporting in addressing harmful content online.

In Indonesia, the Ministry of Communications and Digital has reported the removal of over 1.3 million harmful online content pieces between October 2024 and March 2025. This initiative focuses on eliminating pornography and online gambling content, with significant public involvement. Of the total, 233,552 items were related to pornography, predominantly from websites, followed by Platform X with 10,173 cases.

The removal efforts also targeted online gambling, resulting in 1.12 million pieces being eliminated. Websites and IP addresses accounted for 1.02 million cases, while Meta platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, had 46,207 cases. The Ministry’s digital space oversight director-general, Alexander Sabar, emphasized the persistent challenge in managing harmful online content despite substantial progress.

Sabar highlighted that over 58,000 pieces of harmful content were addressed within the first eight days of March 2025, underlining the need for continuous public involvement. The Ministry plans to further enhance its AI-based monitoring system for quicker detection of harmful content. Moreover, it aims to collaborate with global digital platforms to improve enforcement actions.
