Indonesia Reinforces Commitment to Global Humanitarian Diplomacy

Nasir stated, “Indonesia supports the role of the ICRC as an impartial institution in humanitarian issues, including in the implementation of the ceasefire in Gaza and the distribution of humanitarian aid for Palestine.”

Nasir also acknowledged the ICRC’s collaboration with Indonesia at the national level in promoting international humanitarian law (IHL). The ICRC is pushing forward its Global Initiative to Galvanize Political Commitment on International Humanitarian Law, set to launch in September 2024, which aims to confront the rising instances of IHL violations in conflict zones, particularly in Palestine. Indonesia will participate as one of the co-chairs in the “Updating Naval Warfare Rules” working group.

In their discussions, Nasir and Ochilet reviewed ICRC and Indonesia collaborations for 2025, which include the annual ICRC briefing with relevant ministries and plans to engage religious communities in Indonesia on the intersection of IHL with Islamic values and law. The partnership in distributing humanitarian aid has strengthened, with Ochilet commending Indonesia’s efforts in providing aid to Palestine, Afghanistan, and Myanmar in 2024.

Furthermore, Indonesia is exploring new collaborations with the ICRC for humanitarian aid distribution to Palestine in 2025. Nasir and Ochilet also deliberated on enhancing ICRC cooperation with ASEAN in humanitarian assistance and IHL promotion through the AHA Center. “Indonesia’s support for the implementation of the ICRC’s humanitarian mandate is in line with the mandate of the Constitution to participate in advancing world peace and security,” asserted Nasir.
