Cuba Achieves First Victory at Women’s World Boxing Championship

Cuba secured its first victory in the Women’s World Boxing Championship with Melani Girado’s win against Tanzanian boxer Halima Vunjabei, who did not show up for the match. Other Cuban boxers, Yoana Rodriguez and Dayira Mesa, will compete soon, guided by their coaches. The team is committed to advancing women’s boxing in Cuba despite its late start.

Cuba achieved a remarkable milestone by securing its first victory at the Women’s World Boxing Championship, with Melani Girado competing in the 57-kilogram category. On March 11, Girado triumphed over her opponent, Tanzanian boxer Halima Vunjabei, who failed to appear for the match.

Located in Nis, Serbia, Girado’s next match will be against the winner of a bout between Nigina Uktamova from Uzbekistan and Georgia’s Kasumova. In addition to Girado, athletes Yoana Rodriguez in the 81-kilogram division and Dayira Mesa at 75 kilograms are set to compete on the following days.

Rodriguez will face Sokhiba Ruzmetova from Uzbekistan, while Mesa will compete against Russia’s Anastasia Shamonova. Coaches Ivan Sadiel Horta del Rey and Santiago Suarez have remarked that although women’s boxing has emerged later in Cuba, they are embracing this venture with great determination and the strong backing of the National Commission, establishing a solid framework for future successes.

In conclusion, Cuba’s inaugural participation at the Women’s World Boxing Championship has been marked by Melani Girado’s victory, despite her opponent’s absence. With additional matches scheduled for Rodriguez and Mesa, the Cuban boxing team, supported by dedicated coaches, is poised to make a significant impact in women’s boxing on the international stage.
