As reported by the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad on March 10, several Dutch Members of Parliament, particularly from opposition parties, have expressed discomfort about the visit, especially following reports from Amnesty International indicating a deteriorating humanitarian situation in Kenya.

Notably, Marieke Wijen-Nass, a Member of Parliament with the Farmer Citizen Movement, raised questions about the rationale behind the King’s visit. She urged the Dutch government to provide assurances regarding the King’s safety amid the current unrest in Kenya. “Trade relations are important, but the Dutch government must be able to demonstrate that the state visit yields results, both economically and diplomatically,” she stated, emphasizing the need for tangible outcomes.

Moreover, Wijen-Nass inquired about potential improvements in Kenya’s human rights situation and whether there is a definitive plan to bolster the position of Dutch entrepreneurs in the country. She expressed her confusion regarding the appropriateness of the visit’s timing without clear answers to these concerns. Supporting her views, Lauren Dassen from the Volt party articulated fears regarding the potential counterproductive implications of the state visit, stating, “The King should not allow himself to be used as a pawn by the Kenyan government.”

The situation has intensified following petitions from a group of Kenyans urging the Dutch government to reconsider the King’s visit due to President William Ruto’s administration allegedly undermining human rights. Earlier in January, activists in the Netherlands submitted a petition with 22,000 signatures to the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, demanding the cancellation of the intended state visit. In response, the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed these petitions as misinformation intended to discredit the Kenya Kwanza administration. Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musaia Mudavadi accused social media influencers of spreading false information and suggested that these protests had transformed into organized cyber attacks aimed at delegitimizing government efforts.
