On March 11, UK Minister for Indo-Pacific, Catherine West, praised Malaysia’s strength as a Commonwealth member during the Commonwealth Observance Day celebration organized by the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) in Kuala Lumpur. In her remarks at Commonwealth House, she commended the nation’s beauty and hospitality while emphasizing the productive discussions held with government representatives focused on key objectives such as economic growth, security, and climate change.

During her inaugural visit to Malaysia, West met with influential female leaders to celebrate International Women’s Day and explore collaborative approaches to overcoming obstacles. She underlined the Commonwealth’s resilience and its significant role in promoting unity and cooperation among its member nations, particularly in addressing global issues such as economic disparities, climate change, inequality, youth unemployment, and democratic challenges.

While marking Commonwealth Day, West stressed the critical need to restore global harmony for the sake of future generations. She expressed her hope for the Commonwealth’s continued efforts in this vital task, lauding the new Commonwealth Secretary-General, Shirley Botchwey of Ghana, for her dedication to strengthening resilience among member states.

West also delivered King Charles III’s official Commonwealth Day message, which underscored the Commonwealth’s role as a trusted platform for diverse nations. She noted His Majesty’s tribute to Commonwealth individuals who served during World War II and reiterated the importance of ongoing collaboration in addressing global issues, including peace, human rights, and environmental restoration.

The event, themed “Together We Thrive,” was attended by Malaysia’s Deputy Secretary-General of the Foreign Ministry, Datuk Ahmad Rozian Abd Ghani, representing Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. It also brought together high commissioners, community leaders from Commonwealth nations, and distinguished Malaysians to emphasize the importance of cooperation and mutual support in tackling global challenges. Notable attendees included the High Commissioner of Singapore to Malaysia, Vanu Gopala Menon, and Bernice Narayanan, Chairman of RCS Malaysia.
