Voting Commences for the 39th World Zionist Congress: A Critical Moment for Israel’s Future

Voting for the 39th World Zionist Congress has started, representing an opportunity for American Jews to influence Israel’s future governance and financial priorities. The election features 21 competing slates amid ideological divisions between liberal and right-wing factions. With $5 billion in funding at stake, the outcome will affect various sectors, including religious pluralism and immigration policies. However, low voter turnout remains a pressing concern for ensuring diverse representation in the congress.

Voting has commenced for the 39th World Zionist Congress (WZC), providing American Jews with a significant opportunity to influence the future of Israel. The election involves 152 seats for American Jews, with decisions that will affect over $5 billion in funding for Jewish causes, as well as authority over organizations like the Jewish Agency and the Jewish National Fund. Voting is open from March 10 to May 4 for any Jewish adult in the United States who agrees to a set of Zionist principles and pays a $5 fee.

This election places emphasis on ideological divisions between liberal and right-wing Orthodox factions, particularly regarding Zionist institutions, financial allocation, religious pluralism, and Israel-Diaspora relations. Rabbi Josh Weinberg, representing the Reform movement, stated, “This election is about nothing less than the soul of the State of Israel and the Jewish people,” highlighting the democratic significance of voters’ choices.

Twenty-one slates have emerged for voters to consider, compared to just 15 in the last election. Among these, Achdut Israel focuses on supporting Israeli troops and Jewish community empowerment; AID Coalition aligns with protests against Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government; and Aish Ha’am advocates for Orthodox Judaism. These slates illustrate the extensive ideological spectrum present.

Furthermore, Am Yisrael Chai represents Jewish college students, while ANU promotes a left-wing vision and supports a two-state solution. Efforts are made to amplify the voices of various communities, including Russian-speaking Jews with Beyachad, while others like Dorshei Torah V’Tzion focus on inclusion and female religious leadership.

Leftist slates such as Hatikvah and Vote Reform champion religious pluralism and democratic ideals, yet they face stiff competition from right-wing groups like the ZOA Coalition, which is staunchly opposed to Palestinian statehood. The current political landscape in Israel greatly influences the dynamics within the WZC, with past election results displaying a shift in representation toward more right-wing factions.

The turnout for these elections has historically been low. In 2020, only 125,000 of nearly 6 million American Jewish adults participated, highlighting a significant gap in representation. Yizhar Hess of the World Zionist Organization describes this as a “shande,” expressing his concern that low participation threatens the diversity integral to Zionism, and he intends to promote awareness and engagement surrounding the election.
