Mondlane’s hearing is part of a criminal case initiated last year, amidst growing tensions following demonstrations led by the politician against last year’s election results.

Since October, Mondlane has not issued any public statements, especially following an incident where police used firearms to disperse crowds during one of his events. Recently, he sought 1.5 million euros in compensation for damages caused during protests in Maputo province. This claim adds to a prior action filed against Mondlane concerning losses in the capital, totaling approximately 486 thousand euros.

Moreover, on January 27, proceedings were opened against Mondlane for a self-proclaimed “presidential decree” that the PGR claims undermines constitutional principles. This decree outlined 30 measures and challenged governmental authority, particularly regarding alleged police actions. The PGR noted that this act constitutes a flagrant violation of the Constitution, as it is reserved for competent state bodies.

Mondlane, recognized as the second most voted candidate in the recent presidential elections, is spearheading significant challenges against the election results, marking the largest opposition since Mozambique adopted multi-party elections in 1994. The election concluded with Daniel Chapo’s victory, who is now Mozambique’s fifth President. Following the protests, reports indicate that as many as 353 individuals have perished due to clashes, with the government confirming at least 80 deaths.
