Namibia’s mining industry, rich in resources such as uranium, copper, and diamonds, is on the verge of transformation through the implementation of solar power. Appian Capital Advisory LLP has acquired a majority stake in the Rosh Pinah Solar Park from Emesco Energy, aiming to enhance the sustainability of mining operations by integrating clean energy solutions.

This acquisition is strategically aligned with the Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation’s expansion project, RP2.0, which seeks to significantly boost ore production. The solar initiative is projected to supply 30% of the energy needed for this expansion, while also locking in energy prices to achieve an 8% cost reduction over the next 15 years.

Appian intends to expand the solar plant’s capacity from 5.4MW to 16.3MW, further advancing the project’s sustainability goals. The enhanced capacity is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 14,000 tons annually, an amount comparable to the environmental benefits of planting 20,000 trees.

Emesco Energy will maintain the operational management of the solar facility to ensure effective execution of the project, drawing from Appian’s experience with similar initiatives in Brazil. This endeavor stands to significantly augment local energy production in Namibia, a nation that currently relies on energy imports.

The integration of solar energy into Namibia’s mining sector represents a pivotal step towards greater sustainability and reduced carbon emissions.
