Rahul Gandhi Calls for Lok Sabha Discussion on Voter List Concerns

Rahul Gandhi has urged for a discussion in the Lok Sabha regarding alleged discrepancies in voter lists, supported by opposition parties. Trinamool Congress member Saugata Roy highlighted specific flaws in the lists and called for their revision, particularly before upcoming elections in West Bengal and Assam.

In New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition, has called for a discussion in the Lok Sabha concerning allegations regarding voter lists. During the Zero Hour in Parliament, Mr. Gandhi asserted that there is a pressing need for dialogue on this matter, as it has garnered attention from various political parties across the nation.

Mr. Gandhi stated, “We accept your remarks that the government does not make voter lists. But we demand a discussion on the issue.” He emphasized that these concerns regarding voter lists are being echoed uniformly by opposition parties in every state, including Maharashtra.

Trinamool Congress member Saugata Roy echoed similar sentiments, citing serious flaws in the voter lists. He highlighted the situation in West Bengal, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee identified instances of voters sharing identical Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers in multiple constituencies.

Mr. Roy noted that a Trinamool delegation planned to meet with the new Chief Election Commissioner to express their concerns over the voter lists. He called for an extensive revision of these lists, particularly with upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam slated for next year, describing the issues as severe and widespread.

The Trinamool leader further mentioned discrepancies observed in Maharashtra and Haryana, urging for the Election Commission to provide clarity on the errors within the lists. He stated, “Let the total voter lists be thoroughly revised. The Election Commission should answer to the country why some mistakes occurred in the lists.”

The call for a discussion on voter lists by Rahul Gandhi reflects a significant concern among opposition parties regarding electoral integrity. With allegations of discrepancies in multiple states, including Maharashtra and West Bengal, the demand for thorough revision by the Election Commission appears crucial, especially ahead of forthcoming elections.
