Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to undertake a state visit to Mauritius on March 11-12, coinciding with the country’s 57th National Day. In his departure statement, he expressed optimism that this trip would both honor historical ties and herald a new chapter in India-Mauritius relations. Invited by Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, PM Modi highlighted the deep-rooted connections between the two nations.
The Prime Minister referred to Mauritius as a crucial maritime ally, pivotal in the Indian Ocean, and a gateway to Africa. He stated, “Deep mutual trust, a shared belief in the values of democracy, and the celebration of our diversity are our strengths.” PM Modi emphasized the importance of historical bonds and people-to-people connections as sources of shared pride between the nations.
Further, PM Modi indicated that the visit would invigorate the longstanding partnership, stating, “I look forward to the opportunity to engage the Mauritius leadership to elevate our partnership in all its facets.” He affirmed the aim to fortify friendship for mutual prosperity and regional security, aligning with India’s Vision SAGAR.
According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, the Prime Minister will pay tribute at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden to Mauritius’ founding leaders. His itinerary also includes a meeting with new President Dharambeer Gokhool and bilateral discussions with PM Ramgoolam.
The visit is expected to encompass various engagements, including inaugurating projects aided by India and signing multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs). These agreements will focus on enhancing capacity building, bilateral trade, combating cross-border financial crimes, and fostering small and medium enterprises. Interaction with the local Indian community and socio-cultural organizations will also be a significant aspect of this visit.
