Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah Appointed as SWAPO’s First Female President
Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has been appointed as SWAPO’s first female leader in a historic event during the extraordinary congress. This delay, following former President Geingob’s death, raised questions about internal party strategy and division. The congress did not appoint a vice president, which leaves uncertainties in leadership roles leading up to the next elections in 2027.
The South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) has made history by appointing Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as its leader, making her the first woman to head the party in its 65-year existence. Her election as SWAPO President was confirmed during the party’s sixth extraordinary congress, hosted at the Windhoek Country Club Resort over the weekend.
Political Analyst Rui Tyitende explained that the delayed congress was necessitated by the passing of former President Hage Geingob. According to SWAPO’s constitution, an extraordinary congress should convene within three months after a leader’s death. Tyitende emphasized that the unusual timing was strategically aligned with Nandi-Ndaitwah’s impending cabinet appointments, noting that supporters from her 2022 candidacy may be anticipating rewards for their loyalty.
The congress concluded with the vice president’s position remaining vacant, raising questions about internal party divisions. “As we speak, there is no vice president of the party, just the president, Secretary General, and deputy Secretary General,” Tyitende remarked, indicating potential strife over this decision.
He stated that contesting Nandi-Ndaitwah’s presidency would be politically detrimental, with any challenges likely disqualifying challengers from future appointments. The extraordinary congress primarily served to endorse her as the presidential candidate, with no new leadership positions announced. As of now, the Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General remain unchanged, while the vacancy of the vice president’s role is noteworthy.
The Central Committee is expected to deliberate on filling the vice president position shortly. Tyitende commented on the likelihood of needing another extraordinary congress for appointments before 2027, highlighting the potential risks of fostering intra-party competition in light of forthcoming regional and local authority elections.
The upcoming 2027 ordinary congress will present an opportunity for all party positions to be contested, including the presidency. Tyitende clarified that Nandi-Ndaitwah will only serve the remainder of President Geingob’s term until then, reaffirming the need for a clear framework as the party approaches future elections.
In summary, Namibia’s SWAPO party has made significant strides by appointing Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as its first female president. While her leadership is welcomed, the remaining vacant vice president position indicates potential divisions within the party. The upcoming decisions from the Central Committee will be crucial as they navigate party structure ahead of the 2027 ordinary congress, where all positions will be contestable, thereby shaping the future leadership dynamics of SWAPO.
