NERSA Updates Solar Registration Numbers in South Africa

NERSA registered 142 solar facilities in South Africa during Q3 2024-25, totaling over 1.1 GW of capacity and ZAR 22,371 ($1.22)/kW investment. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has reported the registration of 142 solar facilities in the third quarter of the 2024-25 financial year, contributing over 1.1 GW of capacity. The average cost for these investments is ZAR 22,371 ($1.22) per kW, emphasizing South Africa’s commitment to broadening its energy generation capabilities.

During this quarter, the Western Cape and Gauteng provinces led in the number of new registrations, with 54 and 35 facilities, respectively. Notably, Limpopo province recorded the highest investment value at ZAR 13.5 billion for 627 MW, underscoring its increasing importance in the national energy landscape.

Among the newly approved facilities, one is designated for commercial purposes. Of the total registered capacity, 82 facilities, exceeding 1 GW, are connected to Eskom’s distribution network while the remainder is linked to municipal networks.

Since the initiation of its current registration framework in 2018, NERSA has authorized 1,811 generation facilities, amounting to 10.5 GW of capacity. NERSA noted that this growth underscores the effectiveness of the regulatory framework in promoting energy generation in South Africa.
