Kenya Meteorological Department Issues Flash Flood Warning Amid Heavy Rains

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains causing flash floods in several counties, including Nairobi and Kiambu. Rainfall exceeding 30mm is expected, particularly from March 10, 2025. Residents, especially in flood-prone areas, should relocate and avoid hazardous conditions as authorities emphasize safety measures.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding heavy rains forecasted for several counties, concurrently declaring a flash-flood alert. Regions including Nairobi, Kiambu, Marsabit, Machakos, and Turkana are expected to be significantly affected by these rains, which are projected to exceed 30mm over 24 hours starting Sunday and extend to northwestern Kenya by Monday, March 10.

In addition to the aforementioned areas, the rainfall will also impact parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, as well as the Rift Valley, with more than 20mm anticipated in these regions within 24 hours. Meteorologists expect the heavy rains to peak over the weekend before tapering off on March 11, 2025.

Residents in flood-prone regions have been advised to avoid taking shelter under trees or near windows, as the risk of lightning strikes increases. The counties identified to receive considerable rainfall include Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kakamega, and Vihiga among others.

Counties such as Bungoma, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, and more will also experience adverse weather conditions. Nairobi officials have specifically urged residents near riparian areas to relocate at least 30 meters from riverbanks to mitigate flood risks as the rainfall begins.

Geoffrey Mosiria, Nairobi’s Environment Chief Officer, has called for vigilance and adherence to safety protocols, stressing the importance of preventing garbage disposal near roads to maintain drainage flow. He advised residents to ensure that drainage systems remain unclogged to lessen flood impacts as the rains intensify.
