Greek FM Calls for International Vigilance on Syria Amidst Rising Violence

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgios Gerapetritis called for U.S. and European vigilance towards Syria’s Islamist regime after violence left hundreds dead. He stressed the inclusion of religious minorities in governance and the cautious lifting of sanctions. Recent clashes between the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an Islamist group and the ousted regime loyalists have claimed the lives of hundreds. While the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported over 1,000 fatalities, the Syrian Network for Human Rights noted a significantly lower count of 327 civilians. This violence represents the bloodiest internal conflict since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad.

As the violence unfolded, UN human rights commissioner Volker Türk expressed grave concern over the reports of entire families being killed amidst the chaos. In response to these developments, Syrian transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa called for national unity and a collective effort to preserve peace. The international community, including Russia and the United States, sought to convene a private meeting of the UN Security Council to address the situation.

Gerapetritis expressed concern over Turkey’s Blue Homeland Doctrine, which asserts maritime claims that infringe upon Greek territorial waters. He maintained that Greece remains committed to international law and that relations between Greece and Turkey have improved in recent years, particularly regarding airspace incursions and cooperation on illegal immigration. Nonetheless, he underscored the need for decisive steps to resolve maritime disputes.

The Greek Foreign Minister also highlighted Greece’s strengthening partnership with India, viewing it as a pivot towards establishing a Middle East-Europe corridor that would provide a counterbalance to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Gerapetritis expressed optimism about diversifying trade routes and securing energy independence from external influences, particularly from China, which had previously aided Greece financially during its economic crisis.
