In Juba, South Sudan, Chief Amet Mabior Yel expressed his joy at the opening of Madhol Hospital, a significant health facility located near his home. The traditional leader, clad in ceremonial attire, attended the grand inauguration with his family. He emphasized the immense relief this hospital brings, alleviating the need for long journeys in search of healthcare services.

The healthcare system in South Sudan faces numerous challenges, including limited resources and frequent disease outbreaks, worsened by ongoing conflict in neighboring Sudan. Madhol Hospital aims to serve as the primary referral center for the densely populated Northern Bahr el Ghazal region, providing critical healthcare support to both locals and displaced individuals.

Financed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Madhol Hospital was inaugurated as a vital addition to healthcare services in the region. According to His Excellency Governor Simon Ober Mawut, this facility is timely given the influx of over 300,000 returnees and refugees seeking safety from the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

His Excellency Shreikh Shakhbout Nahyan Al Nahyan, UAE’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to enhancing healthcare provision in South Sudan. He indicated a commitment to collaborate with the government and international partners on healthcare initiatives that adhere to international standards.

Dr. Karamagi, WHO Representative for South Sudan, acknowledged the hospital’s inauguration as a considerable enhancement to the country’s healthcare system. He noted the importance of the partnership between South Sudan and the UAE in advancing health services amidst the challenges posed by the conflict.

Since April 2023, the ongoing conflict in Sudan has prompted a significant number of individuals to seek refuge in South Sudan, adding additional strain on its healthcare infrastructure. Health authorities and organizations like WHO are working continuously to provide necessary healthcare to these displaced populations.

Collaborative efforts by WHO and health partners have led to improved disease surveillance and emergency response capabilities, essential for managing the healthcare needs of refugees and returnees.
