Confrontation Erupts in Lima Sands: PPP/C Supporters Clash with Azruddin Mohamed
Tensions arose in Lima Sands as PPP/C supporters clashed with Azruddin Mohamed during a community outreach meeting. Protests led by PPP/C members aimed to prevent Mohamed from addressing residents’ concerns about local issues, resulting in a heated verbal exchange. Many residents voiced their frustrations regarding government neglect and expressed support for Mohamed, indicating a desire for change in leadership.
Recent tensions erupted between supporters of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and businessman Azruddin Mohamed at a community meeting in Lima Sands, Region Two. Approximately 100 residents had gathered for over eight hours to engage with Mohamed, who is conducting outreach as part of his upcoming election campaign. However, the atmosphere quickly shifted as a confrontation occurred between the residents and the current PPP/C Member of Parliament, Nandranie Coonjah, alongside other PPP/C supporters.
Around 15 supporters of the PPP/C protested at the entrance, holding placards and using loudspeakers to express opposition to Mohamed’s presence. One male protester attempted to discredit him by stating, “Mr. Mohamed has been sanctioned by the US…for the tremendous support you have been given to you, the people of this region and Guyana as a whole.” A female protester demanded, “Pay your tax! Everybody get Mohamed out of Lima Sands!”
In a provocative instance, Coonjah attempted to film interactions with residents, engaging in a verbal spat that resulted in residents shouting back and ultimately forcing her away from the scene. The meeting, initially intended to commence at 2 p.m., faced delays due to the protests, ultimately starting at 5 p.m. Attendees had been waiting since 1 p.m. for the discussion to begin.
A video shared on Team Mohamed’s Facebook page revealed a resident expressing strong support for Mohamed: “Mr. Mohamed, if you are running, every one of us here will support you… The ministers do not come into Lima. Since this road finished, nobody even came to see what’s going on!” This sentiment mirrored the frustration voiced by many residents regarding insufficient government attention to their persistent issues, such as inadequate infrastructure and water supply problems.
In conclusion, the escalating tensions between PPP/C supporters and businessman Azruddin Mohamed in Lima Sands highlight the community’s dissatisfaction with the government’s responsiveness to their needs. The confrontation reflects broader regional concerns regarding local representation and infrastructural neglect. Residents are eager for change and actively seek leadership that addresses their challenges.
