A recent report from the United Nations has revealed alarming human rights violations against Muslim communities in the Central African Republic (CAR). Documented by the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission (MINUSCA) and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the report highlights abuses perpetrated by armed groups, including connections to the national armed forces, primarily affecting refugees and Sudanese asylum seekers in the country’s southeast.

The report indicates that the Wagner Ti Azande group, associated with the national military, carried out coordinated attacks resulting in the deaths of at least 24 individuals. Victims faced summary executions, sexual violence, forced labor, torture, and degrading treatment, alongside widespread looting of residences and businesses.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has called for accountability and transparency concerning the operations of the Wagner Ti Azande group, asserting that such crimes “must not go unpunished” to avert further violations. Türk emphasized that if the group’s legality cannot be assured, disarmament is warranted.

The report details violent incidents occurring in Dimbia and Rafaï in October 2024, where armed groups targeted Fulani Muslims and Sudanese asylum seekers. Witness testimonies include accounts of a 36-year-old Fulani man executed publicly and seven individuals disposed of alive in a river. Additionally, the report notes that 24 women and girls experienced sexual violence during these attacks.

Further violence was recorded in Mboki in January 2025, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 people at a Fulani camp. In light of these events, 14 alleged perpetrators have been arrested. The UN has urged the CAR government to launch thorough investigations and ensure prosecutions, highlighting that inadequate security measures in several areas have exacerbated the climate of impunity.
