Hanna Tetteh, the UN envoy to Libya, highlighted the critical role of women in the country to commemorate International Women’s Day. She noted their historical achievements and ongoing contributions to society and governance, despite facing numerous challenges. “Today, they continue to drive progress, lead their communities, participate in governance and stand for election… The inclusion of women at all levels is essential for sustainable peacebuilding efforts,” Tetteh stated in a UNSMIL announcement.
Tetteh emphasized that women in Libya encounter considerable obstacles, particularly in public and political settings. “Systemic barriers, discrimination, and violence continue to hinder their full and meaningful participation,” she asserted. She criticized the lack of comprehensive legislation protecting women’s rights, stating this undermines their ability to fully contribute to society beyond familial roles.
A significant achievement was noted with the upcoming election of Libya’s first female mayor at the end of 2024, which Tetteh described as a historic milestone. She urged that this development should catalyze women’s inclusion in discussions about national progress. “Women’s active participation in politics is crucial for fostering inclusive and representative governance,” she added.
Recognizing ongoing global challenges, Tetteh referenced the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, which serves as a global framework for advancing women’s rights. “The respect for these rights translates into greater opportunities for women to contribute to the development of society,” she commented.
UNSMIL has encouraged all Libyan stakeholders to act decisively to enhance the status of women and girls. Tetteh concluded by advocating for increased leadership opportunities for women and emphasized the need to empower young women and girls to foster peace and development in Libya.
