Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Inaugurates SkyWin Aeronautics Industries

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed inaugurated SkyWin Aeronautics Industries in Addis Ababa, focusing on drone manufacturing for civilian and military use. The initiative aims to bolster Ethiopia’s self-reliance in technology and enhance its defense capabilities. The Prime Minister emphasized that the developments are not meant to fuel conflict but to prevent it, security and stability being the overarching goal.

On March 8, 2025, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed inaugurated SkyWin Aeronautics Industries in Addis Ababa, marking a significant advancement in Ethiopia’s technological capabilities. The newly established company specializes in manufacturing unmanned aerial vehicles designed for both military and civilian applications. This initiative reflects Ethiopia’s commitment to achieving self-reliance in the security sector and enhancing its domestic production capacity.

During the inauguration, Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that the successful development of locally manufactured drones was previously unimaginable. He highlighted the diverse capabilities of these vehicles, crafted by skilled young Ethiopian professionals, as a noteworthy achievement for the nation. To ensure the sustainability of this progress, he encouraged ongoing research, expansion into broader markets, and the enhancement of local production of smart sensor technologies.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister articulated that the advancements in drone technology, alongside developments at the Homicho Ammunition Engineering Industry, are intended for peaceful purposes. “We are developing capabilities like these—not to fuel conflict, but to prevent it. Through deterrence, we seek to secure peace and stability in the face of belligerent actors,” he stated, underscoring the aim of these initiatives to foster national security.

The inauguration of SkyWin Aeronautics Industries signifies Ethiopia’s determination to enhance its defense capabilities and technological self-sufficiency. By establishing a local drone manufacturing sector, the country not only aims to meet its own security needs but also seeks to export its products.
