The Ghana Weightlifting Federation’s elective congress election was abruptly terminated by National Security officials after federation executives violated a court injunction. This injunction was filed by Michael Nii Annan Yarboi, a former parliamentary aspirant, who sought to prevent the election due to allegations of procedural malpractice.
Marie Korkor Agbah-Hughes, a prominent Ghanaian female weightlifter, revealed in an interview that the federation had been notified of the injunction from the Accra High Court yet proceeded with plans to conduct the election on March 8, 2025, despite the court’s ruling. “We were supposed to have the Weightlifting [Federation] elections, but there was an injunction sent because the elections committee was running an illegal election,” she stated.
The presidential contest featured Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the New Patriotic Party’s Second Deputy Minority Whip, competing against Michael Nii Yarboi Annan. A confrontation erupted between the supporters of the two candidates, prompting National Security officials to intervene at the election venue. Although it remains unclear how the officials were alerted, they mandated the immediate cessation of the election proceedings once order was restored.
