Former President Nana Dankwa Akufo-Addo attended the 60th Remembrance Service of John Boakye Danquah, known as J.B. Danquah, in Kyebi, Eastern Region. He was joined by former First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo and the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin. J.B. Danquah is recognized as a significant figure in Ghana’s political history, having contested Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in the 1960 presidential election, albeit unsuccessfully.

Danquah faced arrests during his life, notably on October 3, 1961, under the Preventive Detention Act, accused of plotting against the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and assassination attempts on Dr. Nkrumah. Despite his release in 1962 and subsequent role as President of the Ghana Bar Association, he was rearrested in January 1964 without formal charges and held at Nsawam Medium Prison.

His life came to an end on February 4, 1965, while still imprisoned. Following the overthrow of the CPP by the National Liberation Council (NLC) in February 1966, the state honored his contributions by conducting a state burial. The event underscores J.B. Danquah’s enduring legacy in Ghanaian history.

The 60th Remembrance Service for J.B. Danquah highlighted his significant contributions to Ghana’s political landscape. His legacy includes contesting the presidency against Dr. Nkrumah, notable arrests under politically charged circumstances, and recognition after his death. The event gathered prominent figures to honor Danquah’s impactful role in shaping Ghana’s history.
