UNICEF Botswana Flood Situation Report: Update on the Crisis Response

Since 16 February, Botswana has been affected by severe flooding, displacing over five thousand people and disrupting access to clean water, healthcare, and education. UNICEF has allocated US$50,000 for essential supplies and called for US$860,000 to support recovery efforts.

Botswana has faced significant flooding since 16 February, displacing more than five thousand individuals, including numerous children. This disaster has severely disrupted access to clean water, healthcare, education, and adequate shelter, particularly impacting the most vulnerable communities and increasing the likelihood of disease outbreaks.

The flooding has brought about considerable infrastructural challenges, including road closures and power outages, which hinder mobility and the delivery of essential services. Health clinics, notably in Molapowabojang and Kanye, are suffering from service interruptions, limiting access to necessary medical support for affected populations.

In response to this crisis, UNICEF has allocated US$50,000 in collaboration with the Botswana Red Cross Society for distributing crucial supplies such as hygiene kits and safe drinking water in the most impacted areas. The initiative also includes the provision of oral rehydration salts and linking to health facilities and child protection in evacuation centers.

To support the government in delivering life-saving assistance and facilitate long-term recovery, UNICEF has issued an appeal for US$860,000.
