Qatar Calls for Diplomatic Resolution in US-Iran Relations and Highlights Gaza Ceasefire Efforts

Qatar’s Prime Minister emphasizes the need for a US-Iran agreement and opposes military intervention. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister, underscored the urgent need for an agreement between the United States and Iran. He stated, “There is no way that Qatar would support any kind of military step in that region. We will not give up until we see a diplomatic solution between the US and Iran. This needs to reach an agreement.” His comments were made shortly after US President Donald Trump expressed aspirations for a “peace agreement” with Iran.

In a televised interview, Al-Thani addressed concerns regarding potential military actions targeting Iranian nuclear sites, asserting that every Middle Eastern nation is apprehensive about such threats. He remarked, “Iran is our next-door neighbor, and we have to maintain a good relation with all our neighbors…it is in the interest of the region to have a better relation with Iran.”

Al-Thani also stated that there has been notable progress in relations between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Iran, despite existing differences over specific Iranian foreign policies. He pointed out that these disagreements have not adversely impacted bilateral relationships within the Gulf region.

Following Trump’s remarks about possible negotiations or military actions regarding Iran, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi maintained that direct negotiations would not occur unless the US ceases its policy of maximum pressure and threats.

Concerning Qatar’s involvement in Gaza ceasefire negotiations, Al-Thani highlighted Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani’s commitment to saving lives. He affirmed Qatar’s negative experiences, stating, “We’ve been under significant attacks for 15 months during this war on Gaza, something unbelievable, no one would handle such an attack.”

Al-Thani expressed pride in achieving the ceasefire agreement, emphasizing that it was a collaborative effort, stating, “The moment we went out to announce that a deal has been achieved, we saw celebrations in the streets, both in Gaza and in Israel. That moment made us forget everything.”

He recognized contributions made by US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, stating, “He pushed when it was required, he did a great job. As partners, we achieved the deal at the end of the day.” A ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement has been in effect since January 19, halting Israel’s military actions that resulted in substantial civilian casualties and destruction in Gaza. Additionally, recent legal actions have been taken against Israeli officials for war crimes related to the conflict.
