Iran Advocates for One-State Solution to Gaza Conflict, Rejects Arab Proposals

The Arab initiative emerged from discussions held in Cairo the previous week, but Iran firmly rejected it.

The current situation in Gaza remains critical, as a ceasefire is in place and Hamas has dismissed Israel’s offer to extend an initial hostage deal. Furthermore, the Trump administration has shown willingness for direct negotiations with Hamas, a development that both Iran and Arab states are contesting, particularly in light of their discontent with the Trump re-settlement strategy for Gazans.

During the OIC meeting, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, asserted that a two-state solution would fail to safeguard Palestinian rights. He emphasized the necessity of establishing a single state that encompasses all original inhabitants of Palestine. Araqchi expressed, “With due respect to the views of some brotherly countries on the two-state solution, the Islamic Republic of Iran maintains its view that this solution will not lead to the realization of the right of the Palestinian people.”

The Iranian government is evidently attempting to reclaim its influence in the Middle East, which has diminished following the downfall of the Assad regime. Additionally, Iran seeks to strengthen its position in Lebanon and leverage the Houthis to pose a threat to Israel. Araqchi articulated a vision for a “one democratic state” as the sole viable resolution to the conflict, citing Israel’s non-compliance with the UN Charter and lamenting the tragic loss of UN staff in Palestine.

Iran has continued to voice unwavering support for Palestine, while simultaneously expressing reservations regarding the potential recognition of Israel within OIC proceedings. The Iranian Foreign Minister reiterated the hope that the OIC meeting would provoke significant international responses to promote justice for Palestinians. Iran appears determined to reassert its influence in the Islamic world, particularly amidst concerns that collaborative Arab proposals might lead to the moderation or replacement of Hamas in Gaza, which would negate Iran’s interests.
