India-U.K. Relations Deepen: Consulate Inauguration in Manchester

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated the new Consulate in Manchester on March 8, 2025, marking the expansion of India-U.K. relations. During his official visit to the U.K. and Ireland, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated a new Consulate in Manchester on March 8, 2025, coinciding with International Women’s Day. He emphasized the significance of this event as a reflection of the evolving India-U.K. relationship, particularly highlighting the appointment of Vishakha Yaduvanshi as the new Consul General. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Minister for the Indo-Pacific Catherine West were also in attendance.

Mr. Jaishankar stated, “We are making up for a lot of things perhaps we could have and should have done earlier,” underscoring the transformation in bilateral relations. He expressed optimism for a future increase in cooperation, adding that the inauguration reflected both progress made and preparations for upcoming opportunities. He pointed out the crucial role of the Indian diaspora in strengthening these ties.

While addressing attendees at the Lancashire Cricket Club, Mr. Jaishankar acknowledged the historical complexities of India-U.K. relations but urged the importance of recognizing the potential for positive developments. He remarked, “Every big, deep, important relationship is a mixed one. I think it’s important to pick the good side, look for the possibilities there.”

Recent tensions, including a pro-Khalistan demonstration, were noted by Mr. Jaishankar, as he recalled incidents challenging the smooth functioning of Indo-U.K. relations. He had previously visited the U.K. in November 2023 to reset these bilateral ties. In this context, he emphasized the strengthening case for deepening ties through initiatives such as the free trade agreement (FTA), which he described as a pivotal expression of the evolving collaboration between the two nations.

Mr. Jaishankar also encouraged U.K. universities to establish campuses in India, citing the University of Southampton’s upcoming plans for a Gurugram campus as a promising example. Additionally, he announced the launch of a Non-Resident Indian Help Centre, the first in the region, further enhancing support for the Indian community abroad. Furthermore, he suggested that imminent direct flights from Manchester to New Delhi could improve connectivity, as airlines like Indigo prepare to increase their presence in the market.

The inauguration of the Consulate in Manchester marks a significant step in the deepening India-U.K. relations, as articulated by Minister S. Jaishankar. Enhancements in trade agreements, university partnerships, and support centers for non-residents symbolize a promising trajectory for future collaboration.
