These discussions aim to enhance market access, diminish tariff and non-tariff barriers, and strengthen supply chain integration between India and the United States.

During Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Washington, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to more than double bilateral trade and to initiate these negotiations by the fall of 2025. This announcement comes amidst President Trump’s assertions that India has agreed to significantly lower its tariffs, which he previously criticized for being overly restrictive on American goods.

In statements made from the Oval Office, President Trump remarked, “Our country, from an economic standpoint and financial standpoint and a trade standpoint, has been absolutely ripped off by almost every country in the world… India charges us massive tariffs, massive, you can’t even sell anything into India.” He also indicated that India’s position regarding tariffs is about to change for the better due to increased scrutiny of their practices.

President Trump reiterated, on separate occasions, that India is among the nations with high tariffs and that reciprocal tariffs on countries imposing tariffs on American products will be enforced starting April 2. Concurrently, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has returned from Washington after discussions with US officials, including Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
