India and Mauritius to Strengthen Ties through PM Modi’s Visit

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Mauritius will include signing MoUs on trade and SMEs, inaugurating key projects, and participating in National Day celebrations. The visit aims to enhance bilateral cooperation and engage with new Mauritian leadership.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Mauritius will see the exchange of several memorandums of understanding (MoUs), focusing on trade and the support of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Additionally, he is set to inaugurate the Civil Service College and the Area Health Centre, both funded by Indian grants. The Prime Minister will be the Chief Guest at Mauritius’ National Day celebrations on March 12, which will include participation from the Indian Defence Forces and a ship from the Indian Navy.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted Mauritius as a vital partner for India in the Indian Ocean, emphasizing their deep-rooted bilateral ties founded on a shared history and strong cultural connections. He remarked that India has long been a preferred developmental partner for Mauritius, engaging in numerous economic and capacity-building initiatives. Misri noted the relationship has significantly deepened in the past decade and plays an essential role in the Vision SAGAR framework, aimed at enhancing security and growth in the region.

Following the November 2024 elections, a new Mauritian government led by Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam has assumed office, with Modi being the first leader to extend congratulations. Misri stated that the visit would be an opportunity for both leaders to engage early in Ramgoolam’s term and Modi’s third term, allowing for a reassessment of bilateral ties and future engagement strategies.

Modi’s itinerary includes paying homage at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, visiting the new President of Mauritius, Dharambeer Gokhool, and meeting other political leaders. Both Prime Ministers are expected to inaugurate projects funded by India and sign MoUs concerning capacity building, bilateral trade, combating cross-border financial crimes, and promoting SMEs. The visit will also feature interactions with the Indian community and various socio-cultural organizations in Mauritius.

In summary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mauritius marks a significant opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties through the signing of various MoUs, focusing on trade and the development of small and medium enterprises. This visit will celebrate the longstanding relationship between the nations, further foster cooperation, and engage with Mauritius’s new leadership.
