Addressing the topic of refugees, she remarked on Germany’s role in receiving a substantial influx of Iraqi individuals over the last decade, explaining that while some came to escape conflict, others sought work or education. Hohmann cautioned against irregular migration as it poses significant risks, stating, “Those who arrive this way have no chance of obtaining residency and will be required to leave Germany.”

Furthermore, Hohmann stressed the importance of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq’s stability and the strong ties Germany holds with Erbil. She acknowledged ongoing issues concerning internally displaced persons (IDPs) residing in camps, stating that Germany supports reconstruction efforts, especially in assisting the Yazidi community and providing trauma recovery programs.

She noted that prevailing conservative attitudes hinder progress despite the Iraqi Prime Minister’s assurances to protect women’s rights. Hohmann warned that proposed amendments to Iraq’s Personal Status Law could jeopardize crucial rights concerning child custody and divorce, affirming, “We fear these changes may roll back gender equality.”
