Ethiopia Commemorates International Women’s Day 2025

Ethiopia commemorated International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8, 2025, under the theme “Rapid and Sustainable Comprehensive Change through Women’s Participation.” Notable celebrations occurred in Koye Feche Sub-city, Sheger City, where Ergoge Tesfaye, the Minister of Women and Social Affairs, along with government officials and stakeholders, attended the main event, highlighting the nation’s dedication to women’s inclusion.

Gambella City also hosted significant celebrations, featuring regional government officials and Meskerem Abebe, Vice President of the Prosperity Party’s Women’s Wing. In her address, Meskerem underscored the vital roles women occupy in leadership and peacebuilding, while also recognizing recent advancements in women’s rights and initiatives aimed at enhancing women’s economic and societal participation.

Ariat Ujulu, Head of the Gambella Regional State Women and Social Affairs Bureau, commented on the empowerment of women within the region. She noted that previous harmful traditions had impeded women’s potential but acknowledged recent efforts aimed at reducing violence against women and boosting their involvement in developmental activities.

Mekelle City in the Tigray region marked International Women’s Day with participation from federal, regional, and local leaders, further emphasizing the nationwide commitment to celebrating and advancing women’s rights. This year represents the 114th global celebration of IWD and the 49th anniversary of the event in Ethiopia, featuring a variety of programs that reflect dedication to gender equality.
